Frequently asked questions

What is my FIRE number?
Your FIRE number is your annual spending divided by your safe withdrawal rate. At the classic 4% rule that's 25× your annual spending — the portfolio size whose returns alone can cover your life indefinitely.
Is this a Coast FIRE calculator?
Yes. Alongside your full FIRE number it shows your Coast FIRE point — the amount that, invested today, would grow to your FIRE number by your target retirement age with no further contributions. It also breaks out Lean FIRE and Fat FIRE targets.
What is the 4% rule?
The 4% rule is a rule of thumb that you can withdraw about 4% of your portfolio in the first year of retirement, then adjust for inflation, and be very unlikely to run out over a 30-year retirement. A lower rate is safer but needs a bigger nest egg.
What are Coast FIRE, Lean FIRE and Fat FIRE?
Coast FIRE is the point where your current investments would grow to your FIRE number on their own, with no further contributions. Lean FIRE is a more frugal target (here 70% of your number) and Fat FIRE is a comfortable one (150%).
Why does my savings rate matter more than my income?
Your savings rate sets both how fast you invest and how little you need to retire on, so it drives the years to FIRE almost by itself — income and portfolio size largely cancel out. Raising your savings rate shortens the timeline dramatically.
